About Me

I spent the first 13 years of my life in South Texas (the Rio Grande Valley) but moved to the Kona side of the Big Island when I was 14 years old and have never wanted to leave. I graduated from Konawaena in 1989 and have since earned my BA in history, minor in math, teaching certificate and Master's in Education. I've been teaching at public high schools in Kona since 1993-1994 (started teaching at Konawaena High and then helped open/start Kealakehe High School in 1997). I work with Yanna Lewis on a school-wide character and civic education class called Ethics and Citizenship. I have taught students from all high school grade and success levels but presently teach A.P. U.S. History and Honors World History. I've also spent time as a SCBM rep and was an Interact advisor for 13-14 years (now kind of honorary). I consider it an honor and a privilege to be a teacher and am grateful for the chance to make a positive difference in this world.

Why I Love Hawaii

I love that Hawaii is centered between the Eastern and Western parts of the world and brings together many of the best aspects that this world has to offer. I love the beauty of the islands, the concept and spirit of Aloha (in its deepest sense), the diversity of cultures/ethnicities and the rights/freedoms that are outlined in both our Hawaii State and United States Constitutions.

Interests

Work/Duty... I also enjoy spending time with my family/friends, reflecting on the meaning/purpose of life, reading (especially about heroic and saintly people) and watching movies. If time allows, I might watch a little football, baseball or basketball but...work/duty comes first!
